Charlie Marcus and Michael Freedman Lectures

America/New_York
162 5th Ave
Description

You're invited to join two talks on Friday, October 29th, 10 am - 12 pm. Both will be hybrid events, held in the 2nd floor auditorium (IDA) as well as via Zoom.

Speaker: Charlie Marcus, principal researcher at Microsoft Quantum Research and a professor at Niels Bohr Institute (NBI), University of Copenhagen
Time: 10 am - 11 am
Title: Protecting Quantum Information
Abstract: This talk will summarize recent experimental progress toward protecting quantum information in solid-state electronic devices. The first is using topological superconductivity to create encodings that spatially separate information in the form of Majorana zero modes. The second, the so-called zero-pi qubit, uses a related encoding where states are separated in a more abstract way.  Both approaches use hybrid materials with essential properties not readily found in a single material.

SpeakerMichael Freedman, Distinguished Scientist with MSR-NE and was Founding Director of Microsoft Quantum – Santa Barbara (Station Q)

Time: 11 am - 12 pm
Title : The Universe from a single Particle
Abstract: I will explore a toy model in which spontaneous symmetry breaking – acting on the level of operators (not states) - can produce the interacting physics we see about us from the simpler, single particle, quantum mechanics we study as undergraduates. The spirit is to look for the simplest context from which the rich physics of our universe might have emerged.  The talk is based on joint work with Modj Shokrian Zini,  see arXiv:2011.05917 and arXiv:2108.12709
