DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Karin Delmestre-Mendendez (CCA)\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nHi
all\,\n\n \n\nPlease join us for a talk by Karín Menéndez-Delmestre\,
one of the Flatiron Institute's 2021-22 IDEA (Inclusion\, Diversity\, Equ
 ity\, Advocacy) Scholars\, on Tuesday\, November 16th\, 3 pm - 4 pm in the
  Ingrid Daubechies Auditorium (IDA)\, 162 Fifth Avenue\, 2nd floor. A rece
ption will follow at 4 pm on the 162 Rooftop (or the 2nd floor Promenade i
f the weather doesn't cooperate).\n\n \n\nThe details are below. Hope to
see you there!\n\n \n\nTitle: \n\n"Nearby galaxies — insights into gal
 axy evolution"\n\nSpeaker:\n\nKarín Menéndez-Delmestre\nValongo Observat

bstract:\nGalaxies in the local universe are a fossil record of events in
the distant universe and present critical constraints on the physical proc
esses underlying the formation and evolution of galaxies. Understanding th
e variety in properties of galaxies today is thus key to unveiling how gal
axies form and transform across cosmic time. We have been plunging into de
ep imaging of nearby galaxies to get a careful mapping of where stellar ma
ss is concentrated in galaxies. Galaxies present a myriad of distinct stel
lar structures. We focus on structures that typically characterise local g
 alaxies — such as bulges\, disks\, bars\, and spiral arms — with the i
ntention of building a present-day benchmark to understand the different a
gents that dictate when and where stars form and through which processes (
giant galaxy collisions\, interactions with smaller galaxies\, etc.). We h
ave also recently launched a long-term observing program to produce the de
epest mapping of galaxies accessible from the Southern Hemisphere\, comple
menting the exquisite work that has been performed in the north.  I will
show a number of discoveries we have made and give you a preview of the ex
citing work we are doing with our nascent southern survey. Last but not le
ast\, I will briefly discuss my involvement in DEI efforts\, in particular
regarding parenting in academia\, and my intentions at the Flatiron Inst
itute as an IDEA scholar.\n\n \n\nLocation:\n\nIngrid Daubechies Auditori
um (IDA)\, Flatiron Institute\, 2nd floor\, or via Zoom. Reception to foll
 ow on the 162 Rooftop.\n\n \n\n\n\nHi there\, \n\nFlatiron Institute is
