We look forward to welcoming you to the 160 Speaker Series talk, And After the Winter We Thrive: Lessons Learned in My Life Journey, on Thursday, July 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Gerald D. Fischbach Auditorium at 160 Fifth Avenue.

M. Roy Wilson will give an honest and heartfelt accounting of painful life lessons he learned about resilience, perseverance and hope as shared in his recently published memoir, The Plum Tree Blossoms Even in Winter. He’ll also discuss racial identity and the many complexities and challenges he faced growing up in a mixed-race household in Japan. Wilson gained many insights in his astonishing life journey from both mentors and mentees, some of which he’ll share in this talk.  

Speaker Bio:

M. Roy Wilson became president of Wayne State University in August 2013. Previous leadership positions include deputy director for strategic scientific planning and program coordination at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health, dean of the School of Medicine at Creighton University, president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and chancellor of University of Colorado Denver/Anschutz Medical Center. As an ophthalmologist and epidemiologist, his research focused on glaucoma and blindness in populations from the Caribbean to West Africa. In 2003, President Wilson was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine), one of the highest honors in the field of medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Allegheny College, a M.S. in epidemiology from UCLA, and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
