March 31 is recognized worldwide as the Transgender Day of Visibility, which is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of transgender people and acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to achieve equality for transgender people. To mark Transgender Day of Visibility this year, all members of the Simons Foundation community are cordially invited to an interactive conversation with Pauline Park, chair of the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy, who will lead attendees through a short presentation on the diversity of the transgender community, followed by a discussion on systemic and structural barriers for full participation of transgender persons in public life.
This event will be followed by a light reception in the CCN pantry.
About our Speaker:
Pauline Park is chair of the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy, a statewide transgender advocacy organization. She led the campaign for passage of the transgender rights law enacted by the New York City Council in 2002. She served on the working group that helped to draft guidelines — adopted by the Commission on Human Rights in December 2004 — for implementation of the new statute. She negotiated inclusion of gender identity and expression in the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), a safe schools law enacted by the New York state legislature in 2010, and the first fully transgender-inclusive legislation enacted by that body, and she is a member of the statewide task force created to implement the statute.
Pauline has written widely on LGBT issues and has conducted transgender sensitivity training sessions for a wide range of organizations, including the New York State Affirmative Action Advisory Council (AAAC), the Association of Vocational Rehabilitation in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (AVRASA), the Latino Commission on AIDS, the Park Slope Safe Homes Project, and the Queer Health Task Force at Columbia University Medical School.
