DESCRIPTION:Matt Swulius is an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology department at the Penn State college of medicine. He is
also a Scientific Director of the Cryo-EM Core Facility. His lab's resear
ch focuses on mechanisms of neuronal development\, where they use a multim
odal imaging approach to correlate cellular dynamics with nanoscale change
s in cytoskeletal architecture. His group also uses deep learning approach
es to denoise and segment large quantities of cryo-electrontomographic dat
 a. In this talk he will give an overview of the lab's biological work as w
ell as an update on recent efforts to use synthetic data for training deep
learning networks to parse complex and noisy cryo-electron tomograms.\n\n
