DESCRIPTION:1st Speaker:  Justin Lindsay\, Ph.D\, Flatiron Research Fel
low\, Structural and Molecular Biophysics\, CCBTopic:  The Evening Comple
x Exposed: How ELF3's Dynamics Shape Temperature Sensitivity in PlantsThe
"Evening Complex" (EC) modulates circadian gene expression and growth in r
esponse to temperature in plants like Arabidopsis thaliana. This regulati
 on involves the ELF3 protein's prion-like domain (PrD)\, which undergoes l
iquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) influenced by a variable-length polyg
lutamine (polyQ) repeat. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal the cri
tical role of polyQ in forming transient temperature-sensitive helices and
its impact on protein secondary structure. Aromatic residues primarily di
ctate protein contact dynamics\, with changes at higher temperatures promo
ting aggregation. Understanding LLPS has broad implications\, from agricul
ture to potential human disease therapies.2nd Speaker: Daniel Needleman\,
Ph.D.\,  Senior Research Scientist\, Biophysical ModelingSenior Project
Lead\, CCBxTopic: Measuring and modeling the dynamics of mitotic error c
orrectionWhen functioning properly\, the mitotic spindle segregates an equ
al number of chromosomes to daughter cells. Over the course of spindle ass
embly\, initially erroneous attachments between chromosomes and the spindl
e are fixed through a process called error correction. Despite the importa
nce of chromosome segregation errors in cancer and other diseases\, we lac
k an understanding of error correction and how it can go wrong. In this ta
lk\, I will describe recent measurements from my group of mitotic error co
rrection\, which can be explained by a simple coarse-grained model. This w
ork provides a quantitative framework for understanding the dynamics of mi
 totic error correction.  \n\nhttps://indico.flatironinstitute.org/event/
