o register for public events. Registration for Presidential Lectures close
s at 2:00 pm on the day of the lecture. Additionally\, staff are expected
to check in with security in the lobby of 160 5th Ave before proceeding to
the Gerald D. Fischbach Auditorium.\n\n\n\nIn this Presidential Lecture\,
Lauren O’Connell will describe her group’s research on the neural bas
is of social bonds in family relationships\, including parental coordinati
on of offspring care and parent-infant affiliation. Her group uses poison
frogs\, which have complex family units and simple brains\, to uncover the
neural mechanisms reinforcing familial interactions. She will also presen
t the latest data on how variation in care quality during development shap
es brain structure and function in offspring.\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nO
’Connell is an associate professor at Stanford University. She received
her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin\, during which time she stu
died the brain mechanism supporting social networks. She then established
her own laboratory at Harvard University\, where she worked to build poiso
n frogs as a model system for studying the neural basis of family relation
ships. In 2017\, she moved to Stanford to continue her research on underst
anding organismal responses to social and environmental stimuli using amph
ibians. She has received numerous honors\, including the Presidential Earl
y Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.\nSCHEDULE\nDoors open: 5:30 p
