Description

People who are starting or growing their families are uniquely vulnerable during humanitarian disasters, whether it is from war, a weather event or a pandemic such as COVID-19. History indicates that the wellbeing of birthing people is an important bellwether for the wellbeing of all of us. During pregnancy through parenthood, daily life can be disrupted by shifting biological and social circumstances. Without attention, care and support, these disruptions lead to multiple forms of suffering: undertreated illnesses, economic disempowerment, isolation. People of color, immigrants, those living in underserved settings suffer most. In this talk, Neel Shah will talk about how we can build systems for childbirth that are more reliable, safe, empowering and, ultimately, more worthy of public trust.

Shah is the chief medical officer of Maven Clinic, the largest virtual clinic for women's and family health, and assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School. A scientist and social entrepreneur, Shah is a globally recognized expert in designing solutions that improve equity and trustworthiness in health care.
