Description

Please join us on Tuesday, November 30 at 4:00 PM ET for the 160 Speaker Series talk, Access and Belonging Fuel Diversity and Discovery in STEM, in the Gerald D. Fischbach Auditorium at 160 Fifth Avenue.

In this talk, Tripati will share the transformative impacts of centering equity as the foundation for bringing new leaders, voices, and perspectives into STEM fields with low diversity rates. She will tell the story of creating the unique model that forms the basis for UCLA’s Center for Diverse Leadership in Science. She says that by seeding and sustaining these types of efforts, we can seize the opportunity to fully step into what STEM and society can be — with discovery, an innovation economy and more people connected to science for generations to come.

Tripati is a professor at UCLA in the division of physical sciences and the faculty director and founder of the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science. The center is recognized nationally as a model for STEM transformation and puts educational theory into practice within an innovative framework that focuses on diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging. Tripati directs a globally unique laboratory for clumped isotope geochemistry. Her work uses experimental and computational approaches to understand equilibrium and kinetic isotope effects. She applies this knowledge to study biominerals, climate and ocean dynamics and the co-evolution of life and environment throughout Earth’s history. Tripati has authored more than 100 publications, has given more than 200 presentations and has 6,000 citations. In addition, she has advised and trained over 130 postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduates and high school teachers and students.

Tripati is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Geological Society of America (GSA), the Geochemical Society, and the European Association of Geochemistry. She is a recipient of AGU’s Dansgaard Award, their Ambassador Award, GSA’s Bromery Award, and UCLA’s Career Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. In addition, she received the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering. This year, she was elected to the California Academy of Sciences. Aradhna also is active in public engagement and participation in science, collaborating with community-based organizations and museums. A child prodigy, she started university at the age of 12. She received her B.S. in Geological Sciences from California State University, Los Angeles, a minority-serving institution. She earned her Ph.D. in earth sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz, was a research fellow at the University of Cambridge and was a research scientist at Caltech before joining the UCLA faculty.
