We look forward to welcoming you to the 160 Speaker Series talk, The Work That Makes All Work Possible, with Angela Garbes on Tuesday, November 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Gerald D. Fischbach Auditorium at 160 Fifth Avenue.
The Covid-19 pandemic shed light on a long-overlooked truth: care work is arguably the only essential work humans do. Without our nannies, child care providers, home health aides, house cleaners and countless others who care for our people and our homes, modern American life screeched to a halt, struggled to find steady footing. The domestic labor so many of us outsource can no longer be seen as unskilled or trivial. It is–and always has been–essential. Together we’ll consider how, throughout American history to the present day, this work is expected from women of color for poverty wages. And, armed with the understanding that our economy relies just as much on domestic labor as it does “professional” work, we’ll explore how we might meet this moment and its opportunity to truly value–financially, culturally, personally–the professionals who perform this essential labor, day in and day out.
Event Schedule:
4:00 — 5:00 p.m. Talk in the GDFA
5:00 — 6:00 p.m. Reception of light bites and drinks on the promenade
