Matt Swulius is an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department at the Penn State college of medicine. He is also a Scientific Director of the Cryo-EM Core Facility. His lab's research focuses on mechanisms of neuronal development, where they use a multimodal imaging approach to correlate cellular dynamics with nanoscale changes in cytoskeletal architecture. His group also uses deep learning approaches to denoise and segment large quantities of cryo-electrontomographic data. In this talk he will give an overview of the lab's biological work as well as an update on recent efforts to use synthetic data for training deep learning networks to parse complex and noisy cryo-electron tomograms.
